L'Ecole de printemps sur les Gaz Quantiques en Dimensions Réduites est soutenue par le programme pour le potentiel humain de la commission Européenne, au titre des conférences scientifiques de haut niveau (HPCF-2002-00120).

Dear colleague,

The Centre for Physics in Les Houches will be hosting from Tuesday 15th to Friday 25th of April, 2003 a school on

"Quantum Gases in Low Dimensions".

This school is especially dedicated to the training of young scientists (graduate students or post-docs). During the session, six internationally recognized scientists will provide a deep theoretical insight into the Low Dimensional Atomic Physics field. The lecturers will come from different branches of physics, including low-temperature physics, many-body physics, condensed matter, quantum optics and atomic physics: the meeting is thought to be a truly interdisciplinary event. A series of seminars will provide an overview of recent experimental and theoretical results. The participants will have the opportunity to present their results during the two poster sessions. Informal discussions between participants will be encouraged (every afternoon is free of lectures and seminars). The limited number of participants (about 70) will ensure the informal character of the session.

Scientific committee

The scientific committee of the school comprises:

Claude Cohen-Tannoudji
Marvin D. Girardeau
Theodor W. Hänsch
William D. Phillips
Henk T. C. Stoof
Main lectures

All of the lecturers are internationally recognized scientists and are known for their high pedagogical qualities. They will give a course consisting of 3 to 5 sessions of 90 minutes each. The courses are complementary and have been thought to span all the subjects concerning Quantum Gases in Low Dimensions:

Yvan Castin (LKB, ENS Paris): Stochastic field methods for interacting Bose gases
Ignacio Cirac (Max Planck Institute, Garching): Optical lattices, rotating 2D Bose gases, quantum information
Benoît Douçot (LPTHE, Université Paris 6): Condensed matter physics in two dimensions : from bosons to anyons
Maxim Olshanii (USC, Los Angeles): Various properties of the 1D Bose gas
G. Shlyapnikov (AMOLF institute, Amsterdam): Correlation properties of low dimensionnal quantum gases
Sandro Stringari (Università di Trento): Phase fluctuation in 1D and 2D trapped Bose gases
Advanced research seminars

Besides these theoretical lectures, the major experimental advances in the field will be covered by seminars (approximately one per day). A partial list of the speakers is given below and will be completed on the website of the school:

M. Girardeau (University of Arizona, USA)
P. Grangier (IOTA, Orsay, France)
R. Grimm (Universität Innsbruck, Austria)
E. A. Hinds (SCOAP, Brighton, UK)
S. Jaakkola (University of Turnu, Finland)
V. Lorent (Université Paris 13, France)
J. Reichel (Universität München and Max Planck Institut)
C. Salomon (LKB, Paris, France)
C. Zimmermann (Universität Tübingen)
Fees and application deadline

There will be no registration fees; a fee of 800 ¬ will be charged for accommodation. However, a number of grants will be available for participants and most of the young scientists should be supported for a large part of the fees. Applications should be submitted via the form on our web page before the deadline February 1st, 2003. To keep the informal character of this school and due to the place limitations in the conference room, the number of students is limited to 50.
