Having your eyes inside the peening chamber
Adsorption induced heterogeneous treatment
On simple geometries (cylinder, prisms, boxes), we have shown that a heterogenerous surface treatment of shot peened samples arises when the collision between the shot and the chamber side walls become inelastic with constant dissipation, leading to an enhanced temporary adsorption of the shot on the side walls. This effect is one order of magnitude larger than the simple heterogeneity arising from boundary collision on the side walls. See also the dedicated movie.

CAD based simulations for shot peening
The treatment of complex 3D geometries (gears, turbomachine blisks) in industrial configurations (e.g. rotating parts) have been studied using efficient collision detection algorithms for short computation times. The various zones of such geometries have been analyzed and have led to a complete determination of the impact properties (velocity, momentum transfer, angle, maximum velocity,...) as a function of the operating conditions. See also the dedicated movie.

Centrifugal turbines
SHOTVISUAL has been recently used to simulate the projection of shot from a centrifugal turbine. Results show that velocity and angle fluctuations due to the rotating turbine induce a heterogeneous treatment on a steel plate. Series of simulations for various operating conditions such as turbine angular velocity show that the treatment can be optimzed and the heterogeneity reduced. See also the dedicated movie.
